Tafyra

Writer / Director

Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, Tafyra is a Toronto-based filmmaker dedicated to blending creativity, education, and culturally rooted storytelling. She is a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University’s Film Studies program and a participant in the OYA Emerging Filmmakers initiative.

Tafyra has written, produced, and directed several short narratives and documentaries inspired by her lived experiences and distinct perspective. Her passion for storytelling led her to co-produce the short film Destreamed, which premiered at the Pan African Film Festival in 2023.

Beyond film, Tafyra is deeply engaged in multidisciplinary creative work, collaborating on projects that include educational animation, sound design, and production design. She is especially committed to creating animated content for Jamaican children, merging entertainment with education in ways that reflect and honor her cultural roots. Through this work, she aims to inspire young audiences while expanding access to meaningful learning experiences.

Tafyra is also passionate about mentorship and education. She actively teaches video editing to youth, equipping them with the technical skills and confidence to explore digital filmmaking. She is particularly dedicated to supporting emerging filmmakers from Jamaica and contributing fresh voices to the evolving film industry.

Looking ahead, Tafyra plans to direct feature films that challenge genre conventions and expand narrative boundaries. Through her work, she hopes to reshape perceptions of female directors and inspire the next generation of storytellers to lead with authenticity and vision.
